Drug Court is a specialized court program designed to help individuals with substance use disorders who have been charged with drug-related or other eligible offenses. Instead of traditional prosecution and sentencing, Drug Court focuses on rehabilitation and recovery to reduce recidivism and improve public safety.
How It Works:
- Eligibility & Referral – Individuals charged with drug-related offenses or crimes linked to substance use may be referred to Drug Court. Eligibility typically depends on the nature of the offense, prior criminal history, and willingness to participate.
- Assessment & Treatment Plan – Participants undergo a substance use assessment, and a personalized treatment plan is developed. This may include detox, therapy, medication-assisted treatment, and other recovery services.
- Judicial Oversight & Accountability – Participants must appear regularly before the Drug Court judge to review progress. The court monitors compliance with treatment, drug testing, and other program requirements.
- Supervision & Support – A team, including probation officers, counselors, and court staff, provides supervision, drug testing, and support services to help participants stay on track.
- Completion & Graduation – Successful participants who complete the program can have charges reduced or dismissed. Those who fail to comply may face sanctions, including jail time or prison.
